So the first thing I want to say about this book is OMG! I love this book. Okay, now that that is out of the way I'll tell you a little about the book.
This story follows Meg who is human, yet not fully. She is known as an cassandra sangue, or blood prophet. Every time her skin is cut and she bleeds she foresees a prophecy of the future. The blood prophets are held in these compounds where they are kept enslaved by the Controllers. The Controllers sell cuts on their skin for money to other people who want to know their future.
One day the Controller punishes Meg, unknowingly giving her the information she needs to escape from the compound. When Meg escapes she stumbles across the Lakeside Courtyard, which is one of the places where Others live to keep an eye on the humans that are living on their land. There Meg meets Simon who has trouble trusting Meg because he can sense she is lying about something. Despite that he takes here in and offers her a job. This leads to changes for both humans and Others....and the brewing war between the two.
So as I said before, OMG I LOVE THIS BOOK! This series is amazing. I have read the entire series so far and have loved them all. Now one thing I will say is that each book starts a little slowly. The author takes the time, in each book, to build up the world a little bit. This allows the author to build up the suspense as things get more and more difficult in both worlds.
That being said, the author's writing is not boring by any means. She has this amazing ability to create new worlds from scratch. This is not the first series I have read by Anne Bishop. She has also written the Black Jewels Trilogy, which has expanded beyond just three books. I love all of the books I have read by Anne Bishop.
If you haven't read this book then you really should. Come live a thousand lives with me.
