So it’s time for another episode of Woes of Working in Customer Service. Now before I start this blog I want everyone reading this to know that I am not a mean person or a person that hates everything…I just have a really low tolerance for people! You may be asking yourself, “Then why do you work in customer service?” Well, I’m not really sure. I am good at faking patience and happiness, most of the time, and the two main jobs I’ve had just happen to be in customer service. I will say before my first job in customer service I was excited about working with the public. One doesn't realize how stupid and frustrating people can be until they work with the public.
Now I will warn you if you continue to read I may come across as a bitch, which I can be if provoked…..but I mean so can everyone else really. Essentially I am just really stressed and need an outlet so if you read this don’t think that all I do all day every day is complain…..I don’t. I tend to bottle that up and let it fester. This is my chance to get it all out so that I can go on my merry way and be a happier person. With that in mind read at your own peril….
Let me start by saying that customer service is one of the most trying jobs out there! Wanna know why? That’s easy...because people are annoying.
Now I know that everyone has their stupid and annoying moments, myself included…..I mean I’m a natural blonde that dyes my hair darker so trust me I have my stupid moments and I can be annoying….this is NOT news to me! There is just something about the customer service field, though, that attracts the customers that are a special kind of annoying….and stupid.
This week I thought I would start with the customer’s inability to read.
Now I'm not talking about the people who legitimately don't know how to.....I'm talking about the people who know how to but, for some reason, choose NOT to.
I see this all of the time at work. The inability to read comes in all forms…..
There is the inability to read the hours posted on the door. I love this one because especially at closing. At my office when we lock the doors we turn off the lights right away….to let people know hey we’re not open anymore. But does that stop people from tugging on the door trying to come in? HELL NO!!!!!!
It’s not like they can’t see the lights either. In order to get into the branch you have to go in one door which leads to a glass vestibule, a glass box essentially that we call the fish bowl…..can you guess why? Then once in the vestibule they have to walk in another door to get into the branch.
People will walk into the vestibule because the outermost door stays unlocked until the last person leaves (until then we lock the inner door) and then tug on the inner door without stopping to look at the hours sign of course.
Now by the time you get close enough to open the outer door you can see that the lights are off….but they still try…..persistent little buggers. Then when they can’t get in they get mad which to me is funny and annoying at the same time because if they see someone walking around inside straightening up they will knock on the door like we will let them in…..WE ARE CLOSED!!!!!!
Then there are the people who can’t read notifications that the main office sends to them. These can range from suspension notifications to congratulations you get a refund from where we accidentally overcharged you on something.
Instead of reading them what do they do? They bring them to me to read….to them! I didn’t know that when I signed on to work in customer service that there would be story time…..multiple times a day. Then some of them get mad about the story that I tell them…..well people I am just reading the story that you brought me!!
Then there are people who read part of a form but then stop halfway. This happens a lot on titles when people are filling out the mileage. On our titles there are two tiny boxes under the odometer statement. One says Exceeds Mileage and the other says Not Actual.
People will read the Exceeds Mileage and then automatically mark the other box without reading it because they assume that they have to mark one and they know it’s not Exceeds mileage…..WRONG!! And this mistake can cost them money because it can affect the resale value of their vehicle…..especially if it’s a newer vehicle. I’m mean, come on…..if you took the time to read half of it FINISH READING IT!!!!!!
Anybody out there reading this blog you are, obviously, someone who CAN read so ......PLEASE READ!!!!!
I think the message I want you to take from this blog is to READ!!!!!
Read signs posted, paperwork before you fill it out, and anything that is handed to you! It will save everybody aLOT of time, frustration, money, headaches, and more importantly it will save MY SANITY!!!!
Until next time…..
